We set the level from the JMA's average daily high for the month, then add items from the average low, wet days and snow. These are our own rules, not the JMA's.

Items we add
- Gloves and a warm hat: when the temperature drops below 0°C on 1 night or more in an average month.
- Layers: when highs are between 10°C and 25°C and the average high is 9°C or more above the average low.
- Umbrella: under 5 wet days, a compact umbrella; 5 to 10, a folding umbrella; 10 to 15, an umbrella; 15 or more, a sturdy umbrella and a rain jacket. A wet day is a day with 1 mm or more of rain or snow.
- Snowy months: when snow lies on the ground on 5 days or more, or 20 cm or more of snow falls, a waterproof jacket with a hood instead of an umbrella.
- Words: we write rain or snow instead of rain when the average low is under 3°C or the JMA records snow in that month. The JMA's precipitation includes melted snow.
- Waterproof boots with grip: when snow lies on the ground on 5 days or more, or the average deepest snow is 10 cm or more.
- Heat: when 10 or more days reach 30°C. Warm nights: when the low stays at 25°C or above on 5 nights or more.
- Quick-dry clothes: when the average high is 25°C or more and humidity averages 75% or more.
Each place uses the JMA station in or nearest to it. Averages are the JMA's normals for 1991–2020.

- Day counts are the JMA's 1991–2020 averages, so they have a decimal. A day with 40% or more sunshine is a day when the sun shone for 40% or more of the time between sunrise and sunset. A clear day has a daily mean cloud cover under 1.5 on the JMA's scale of 0 to 10, and an overcast day 8.5 or more.

What is the best month to visit Japan?
By our rule (an average high between 15°C and 25°C and fewer than 10 wet days), the months that qualify in the most of our 14 places with temperature records are April (8 places), November (8 places), May (6 places) and October (6 places) (JMA, 1991–2020).
What are the coldest and hottest months in Japan?
January has the lowest average high in all 14 of our places with temperature records, and August has the highest in 13 of the 14 (JMA, 1991–2020).
Which month has the most visitors to Japan?
In 2025, April had the most arrivals (3,909,128) and February the fewest (3,258,491) (JNTO).
When is the rainy season in Japan?
In an average year (1991–2020) the JMA puts the rainy season at around 10 May to 21 June in Okinawa, 6 June to 19 July in Kinki (Kyoto and Osaka) and 7 June to 19 July in Kanto-Koshin (Tokyo).
When is typhoon season in Japan?
Typhoons come within 300 km of Japan most often in August (3.3 in an average year) and September (3.3); 11.7 do so in an average year (JMA, 1991–2020).
When do cherry blossoms open in Japan?
The JMA's sample trees open on average from 22 March in Fukuoka to 1 May in Sapporo (1991–2020). In Naha the JMA watches a different species, the Taiwan cherry, which opens around 16 January.
