Power banks on 99 airlines flying to Japan. From each airline's own pages, checked 2 October 2026 to 11 October 2026. — means the page we read gives no number.

77airlines: not to be used on board
52airlines allow up to 160 Wh
27airlines allow up to 100 Wh
83airlines allow up to 2 per person
Using a power bank on board: what the 99 airlines say
  1. Not to be used77 airlines
  2. Can be used8 airlines
  3. Not stated14 airlines
How we counted

Not to be used on board means the airline says you may not use a power bank during the flight. The Wh limit is the largest power bank the airline allows, including sizes that need the airline's approval. The number per person counts power banks only: Air Canada and SriLankan Airlines give a limit for all spare batteries together, so they are counted as no number. For the overhead bin, an airline that only recommends not using it (China Airlines) is not counted.

Open a row to see the airline's own wording. 39 airlines have a page with their full power bank rules; for the others, the name links to the airline's baggage page.

Japan's Civil Aviation Bureau (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) asks passengers to follow these rules. The limit of 2 per person started on 24 April 2026.

  • Never in checked baggage: always take power banks into the cabin.
  • Over 160 Wh: not allowed.
  • Up to 2 power banks per person (from 24 April 2026).
  • Do not charge a power bank on board, for example from the seat power outlet (prohibited).
  • Do not use a power bank to charge other devices on board.
  • Do not put it in the overhead bin. Keep it at hand, for example in the seat pocket.
  • Protect each one from short circuits, for example with insulating tape on the terminals or a case.

Some airlines have stricter rules than these, so follow your airline's rules. In the table, 77 of the 99 airlines say a power bank is not to be used on board.

Largest power bank allowed: number of airlines (99)
  1. 160Wh52 airlines
  2. 100Wh27 airlines
  3. No number on the page20 airlines

52 airlines allow power banks up to 160 Wh and 27 allow up to 100 Wh. 20 do not give a number on the page we read.

Working out the Wh of your power bank

Wh = rated capacity (mAh) × rated voltage (V) ÷ 1,000. In the example from Japan's Civil Aviation Bureau, a 27,000 mAh, 3.7 V power bank is 99.9 Wh.

Power banks per person: number of airlines (99)
  1. Up to 283 airlines
  2. 14 airlines
  3. No number on the page12 airlines

83 airlines allow up to 2 per person and 4 allow 1 (WestJet, Emirates, Etihad Airways, EgyptAir). Japan's own rule is also up to 2 per person from 24 April 2026.

Where to keep a power bank on board: what the 99 airlines say
  1. Not in the overhead bin65 airlines
  2. Keep it with you or in the seat pocket11 airlines
  3. Not stated23 airlines

65 airlines say a power bank must not go in the overhead bin and 11 say to keep it with you or in the seat pocket. All 93 airlines that mention checked baggage say a power bank must not go in it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a power bank on board?

On most airlines, no. Of 99 airlines flying to Japan, 77 say it is not to be used on board, 8 say it can be and 14 do not say. Japan's rules from 24 April 2026 also ban charging a power bank on board and ask you not to use it to charge other devices.

How many Wh can a power bank be?

Up to 160 Wh on 52 airlines and up to 100 Wh on 27. Under Japan's rules, a power bank over 160 Wh cannot be taken on board.

How many power banks can I bring?

83 airlines allow up to 2 per person and 4 allow 1. Japan's own rule is up to 2 per person from 24 April 2026.

Can I put a power bank in checked baggage?

No. All 93 airlines that mention it say a power bank must not go in checked baggage, and Japan's rules do not allow it either. Keep it in your carry-on.
