| Autumn Takayama Festival (Hachiman Matsuri)秋の高山祭（八幡祭） | 9 and 10 October every year | Around Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine and central Takayama. Festival floats (yatai) are displayed, karakuri puppets perform and a festival procession tours the town. A night festival (yoimatsuri) is held on the evening of 9 October, when floats lit with lanterns move slowly through the town. The festival is registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (Yatai Gyoji of the Takayama Festival, December 2016). The main areas of the city are under traffic control and cars cannot enter. Events cancelled because of the weather are not postponed. Please do not touch the floats. Drones are prohibited. In the 2026 programme, karakuri puppet performances (about 50 minutes) start at 12:00 and 14:00 on 9 October and at 11:00 and 13:00 on 10 October. The procession (gojinko) runs from 13:20 to about 15:30 on 9 October, and from 8:30 to about 12:00 and from 13:30 to about 16:00 on 10 October.
