Editorial policy

Where the information comes from, how it is checked, how AI is used, and how mistakes are fixed.

Sources

We use sources in this order. Anything outside this list is not used.

  1. Japanese government bodies

    Transport Ministry, Japan Customs, Health Ministry, the Animal Quarantine Service and Plant Protection Station, Immigration Services Agency, Foreign Ministry, Japan Tourism Agency and JNTO, Japan Meteorological Agency

  2. Airport operators

    Narita International Airport Corporation, Japan Airport Terminal (Haneda), Kansai Airports and others

  3. Airlines

    The rules each airline publishes on its own site

  4. Rail and bus operators

    Fares, passes and luggage rules from the operators themselves

  5. Not used

    Personal blogs, forums and other travel sites

Checking and updates

  • Every page shows the date its sources were last checked.
  • When a rule changes, the pages it affects are updated and their date changes. One example is the new tax-free system that starts on 1 November 2026.
  • Wording from official pages is quoted as it is, not summarised.
  • When an official source does not give a figure, the page says so instead of estimating one.

How AI is used

This site is built with the help of AI tools. They collect official pages, draft text, translate it, and compare the numbers on our pages with the sources. The rules and numbers come from the sources listed on each page, not from what an AI model happens to know.

Translations into Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean and Japanese are made with AI. Automated checks then compare the numbers, names and links in each translation with the English page.

Corrections

If you find a mistake, send the page address through the contact form. When a mistake is confirmed, it is fixed and the date on the page is updated.

Some pages link to booking services for eSIMs, rail passes, tours and hotels. If you book through one of these links, this site may earn a commission. The price you pay does not change. A commission never changes how a rule is described or which sources are used.
