Suica, PASMO and ICOCA: Japan IC cards for travellers

An IC card is a prepaid card for trains, subways and buses: tap it on the reader at the ticket gate and the fare comes off the balance. Suica is issued by JR East, PASMO by Tokyo's private railways and subways, and ICOCA by JR West.

Welcome Suica, TOURIST PASMO and Welcome Suica Mobile cannot be refunded. Plan to use up the balance before the card expires.

The cards that work together

In PASMO and Suica areas, 10 different cards can be used, including Kitaca, ICOCA, PiTaPa, TOICA, manaca, HAYAKAKEN, nimoca and SUGOCA. These cards cannot be used on some lines. Only PASMO and Suica work on the Kanto Railway and the Chiba Monorail, and PiTaPa does not support nationwide e-money use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Suica, PASMO and ICOCA?

Suica is a JR East IC card that can be used on trains, buses and for shopping. PASMO's rules define PASMO as the IC-chip card, able to record monetary value, that is issued by PASMO Co., Ltd.

Can I use Suica in Osaka and Kyoto?

Osaka Metro's FAQ says its subways and buses accept PiTaPa and ICOCA, and also Suica (including Mobile Suica), PASMO, Kitaca, manaca, TOICA, Hayakaken, nimoca and SUGOCA. Kyoto City Bus & Subway's guide says IC cards can be used on both the city bus and the subway. Where can I buy Welcome Suica?

Welcome Suica is sold at JR EAST Travel Service Centers at Narita Airport Terminal 1, Narita Airport Terminal 2・3 and Haneda Airport Terminal 3 (Tokyo Monorail) stations, and at Tokyo, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ueno, Yokohama and Sendai stations. Welcome Suica cannot be refunded, whatever the validity period or the remaining balance on the card.

Can I still buy PASMO PASSPORT?

PASMO PASSPORT is no longer sold. PASMO's notice of October 4, 2024 says that sales had already ended. PASMO's TOURIST PASMO page says the card is available from two railway companies at Haneda Airport and Narita Airport.

Where can I buy TOURIST PASMO?

At Haneda Airport Terminal 1・2 Station (Keikyu), TOURIST PASMO is sold at the ticket machines for travelers, one at the Terminal 1 gate and one at the Terminal 2 gate. Credit cards are accepted. At Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station (Keikyu), TOURIST PASMO is sold at the Keikyu Tourist Information Center on the 2nd floor Arrival Lobby next to the ticket gates, and at one ticket machine for travelers next to the center. Credit cards are accepted.

Can I use Suica on an iPhone?

To add a transit card such as Suica to Apple Wallet, Apple says you need an Apple Account signed in with two-factor authentication and an eligible payment card in Apple Wallet.

Can I use Suica on an Android phone?

On Android smartphones Suica can also be used with Google Pay, and you can issue a new Suica from the Google Wallet app even if you do not have a Suica card.

Is there a deposit on Suica?

A new Suica card includes a 500 yen deposit in its price, and the deposit is refunded when you return the card.
