Otaru Aquarium in Winter 2026-27: 25 Minutes by Bus
The opening hours come from the Hokkaido Tourism Organization Otaru Aquarium spot page, which says they change with the season. Check the aquarium’s own website for the winter period and the show times before you set out. This guide covers the train from Sapporo, the bus ride, and what else in Shukutsu stays open once the snow arrives.
Why searches for Otaru Aquarium peak in January
Interest in Otaru Aquarium more than triples in winter. In Google Keyword Planner data for September 2025 to August 2026, worldwide searches sat at 14,800 in October and November 2025. They jumped to 40,500 in December, peaked at 49,500 in January 2026 and held at 40,500 in February.

January is the tallest bar in the chart, at 3.3 times the October figure. The quietest month was May 2026, with 9,900 searches. The rise starts in December, so book trains and rooms for a January visit early.
The animals explain much of the pull. The tourism organization lists programs with penguins, seals, dolphins, walruses and Steller sea lions. It asks visitors to check the official schedule for the times, because they are set by the aquarium and can change. Plan your day around the program you most want to see, then fit the bus times around it.

The photo above shows the kind of scene people search for: penguins at the aquarium on the Shukutsu coast. February adds a second reason to go. The Otaru Snow Light Path and the Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 both fall in that month. Sapporo makes an easy base for both.
Hours, season and what to see
The aquarium opens from 9:00 to 17:00, and the hours shift with the season. During its operating period it has no closing days. The JNTO Travel Japan Otaru Aquarium page gives the address as 3-303 Shukutsu, Otaru-shi, Hokkaido. In Japanese, that is 北海道小樽市祝津3丁目303, postal code 047-0047.
| Place | Otaru Aquarium |
|---|---|
| Hours | 9:00-17:00, changes by season; no closing days during the operating period |
| Access | About 25 minutes by Chuo Bus from JR Otaru Ekimae Terminal; about 20 minutes by car from Otaru IC |
| Official site | Hokkaido Tourism Organization Otaru Aquarium spot page |
The car park has 1,000 spaces. It charges a fee for most of the year but is free in the winter season. The phone number is 0134-33-1400 if you need to ask about the winter period in advance. The Otaru Aquarium Public Corporation, at the same address, also manages the Herring Mansion nearby.
Inside, the main draw is the animal programs. Five groups have scheduled sessions: penguins, seals, dolphins, walruses and Steller sea lions. Check the day’s schedule when you arrive, then work out which sessions you can reach. If you only have a few hours, two programs and a walk around the tanks fit comfortably.
Dress for the cold even though much of the visit is indoors. The aquarium sits on the coast at Shukutsu, at the end of the bus line, and you wait for the bus outside. A pair of disposable hand warmers helps at the bus stop.
Getting there from Sapporo and New Chitose Airport
Take the JR train to Otaru first, then the bus. The JR Hokkaido New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Otaru guide lists six Airport Trains an hour from the airport to Sapporo between 9:00 and 16:00. One is a Special Rapid that takes 33 minutes at the fastest. Three are Rapid trains (37 minutes) and two are Semi-Rapid trains (43 minutes).
Some of these trains run straight through to Otaru. The fastest trip from the airport to Otaru takes 73 minutes. Our New Chitose Airport to Sapporo page puts the fare to Sapporo at 1,230 yen. The airport bus to Sapporo Station takes 63 or 74 minutes for 1,500 yen.
The train from Sapporo to Otaru
From Sapporo, check the destination before you board. JR Hokkaido warns that trains bound for Teine or Hoshimi do not go to Otaru. Look for Otaru on the departure board, or take an Airport Train that continues there.

The illustration above shows the three steps from Sapporo Station to the aquarium. Most seats need no booking. Non-reserved seats are in cars 1 to 3 and 5 to 6, and car 4 is for reserved seat holders only.
You can tap in with Suica, ICOCA, PASMO, Kitaca and the other main IC cards. Ticket machines take cash only, while the JR ticket counter takes cash and credit cards. QR code payments are not accepted. Need a card? Our page on buying an IC card at New Chitose Airport covers the Kitaca counter. The JR ticket office there opens 6:30 to 22:00.
Each passenger can bring up to 2 bags on board. Each bag must weigh 30 kg or less, and its three sides must add up to 250 cm or less.
The bus from Otaru Station

The photo above shows JR Otaru Station, where the train ends. Walk out to the Chuo Bus Otaru Ekimae Terminal and find the bus for the aquarium. Look for this destination on the bus:
- おたる水族館行き (Otaru Suizokukan-yuki): bound for Otaru Aquarium.
Ride to the last stop, which takes about 25 minutes. The Otaru City transport in Otaru page gives the terminal’s number as 0134-25-3333 and links to a bus location system. Use it to see where your bus is before you leave the warm station.
By car, the aquarium is about 20 minutes from Otaru IC on the Sasson Expressway. The city also lists a sightseeing taxi through the Otaru Hire Association (0134-61-1738). It charges by time, and a regular taxi adds 3,900 yen for every 30 minutes.
In summer you could take the Aobato sightseeing boat to Shukutsu instead. That route takes 20 minutes one way for 1,100 yen per adult and 550 yen per child. It only runs from mid-April to mid-October, so in winter the bus is the main way in.
Shukutsu in winter: what is open and what is closed
Most sights in Shukutsu close for the snow season. The aquarium stays open. The Herring Mansion, the boat and the rental bikes do not.
| Place | In winter | Season and price |
|---|---|---|
| Otaru Aquarium | Open, car park free | 9:00-17:00, hours change by season |
| Otaru Herring Mansion | Closed | 4 April to 23 November 2026, adults 300 yen |
| Aobato sightseeing boat | Not running | Mid-April to mid-October, Shukutsu route 1,100 yen |
| Rental bikes (Otaru Kanko Shinko Kosha) | Closed | April to October, about 500 yen a day |
| Kitarin | Sat, Sun, Mon and events: luggage and umbrellas only | Bikes April to November |
| Otaru Canal | Open, lamps lit at dusk | 8 minutes on foot from JR Otaru Station |
| Otaru Snow Light Path | February | 7 to 14 February 2026 |
The table above sorts each place by its winter status. Use it to decide how long to stay in Shukutsu and when to head back to the canal.
Otaru Herring Mansion
The Herring Mansion was built in 1897 in Tomari, a village on the west coast of the Shakotan Peninsula. In 1958 the Hokkaido Colliery and Steamship Company moved it to its current site and rebuilt it. In 1960 it became the first farmhouse-type building in Hokkaido listed as a Hokkaido Tangible Cultural Property.
Inside you see tools used for herring fishing and processing, plus the daily goods and photos of the fishermen who lived there. The Otaru City Herring Mansion opening notice sets the 2026 season at 4 April to 23 November. It opens 9:00 to 17:00, closing at 16:00 from 16 October.
| Place | Otaru Herring Mansion |
|---|---|
| Price | Adults 300 yen, high school students 150 yen, elementary and junior high free |
| Hours | 4 April to 23 November 2026, 9:00-17:00 (16:00 from 16 October) |
| Access | Chuo Bus to the Otaru Aquarium last stop (25 minutes), then 5 minutes on foot |
| Official site | Otaru City Herring Mansion opening notice |
Entry is 300 yen for adults, 150 yen for high school students and free for elementary and junior high school students. Groups of 20 or more pay 240 yen per adult. From the aquarium bus stop, the walk takes 5 minutes, and the city car park next to it is free.
In December, January and February you can see the building from outside, but the doors stay shut until April.
Boats, bikes and the observatory
Otaru Kanko Shinko Kosha rents bikes from April to October. A day costs about 500 yen. Two other shops, Kitarin and COTARU, rent bikes from April to November. In winter Kitarin opens only on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and event periods, for luggage storage and umbrella rental.

The illustration above splits Otaru into what you can still visit in winter and what is closed. The aquarium, the canal and the Snow Light Path are open. The mansion, the boat and the bikes wait for spring.
One extra event ran in February 2026. The Hokkaido District Transport Bureau held a trial at the Shukutsu Panorama Observatory from 9 to 18 February, as part of a project on overtourism. The Otaru City Shukutsu Panorama Observatory winter event page lists entry at 1,000 yen per person, for adults and children alike.
Visitors signed up on the day near the aquarium’s first car park and rode a shuttle car to the top. Walking or driving up was closed during the event. A guided snowshoe tour ran from 11 to 17 February in three daily sessions. Each took up to 10 people at 5,000 yen per person.
Otaru Canal and the Snow Light Path
Head back to Otaru Station by bus in the afternoon, then walk 8 minutes to the canal. The Otaru City Otaru Canal page gives its length as 1,140 m. It is 20 m wide along the harbor road and 40 m wide in the north section.
Along the path stand 63 gas lamps, and the old stone warehouses now hold restaurants. At dusk the lamps come on and the warehouses are lit up. The Asakusa-bashi garden, a well-known photo spot, has a tourist information office.

The photo above shows the canal and its warehouses in winter. In February the canal is one of the main venues of the Otaru Snow Light Path, a candle event that volunteers started.
Otaru Snow Light Path dates
The Otaru City Snow Light Path schedule page lists the 28th event for 7 to 14 February 2026. The 27th ran from 8 to 15 February 2025. Both editions ran eight days, from a Saturday to the next Saturday. The 2027 dates have not been announced yet.
The event spreads across about 20 venues. On the canal, floating candles shaped like old glass fishing floats sit on the water from Asakusa-bashi to Chuo-bashi. The old Temiya Line track keeps the original look of the event. Otaru Art Village opens a kids’ area in its courtyard, and on Mount Tengu candles lead up to the shrine and the observation deck.
A one-day winter plan from Sapporo
Start early so you reach the aquarium when it opens. A day trip from Sapporo to Otaru can look like this:
- Take a train to Otaru from Sapporo Station in the morning.
- Walk to the Otaru Ekimae Terminal and ride the bus about 25 minutes to the aquarium.
- Spend the late morning and early afternoon at the aquarium and its programs.
- Take the bus back to Otaru Station and walk 8 minutes to the canal.
- Stay for the lamps at dusk, then take the train back to Sapporo.

The diagram above traces the same route from New Chitose Airport or Sapporo to the aquarium door. If you land in the morning, you can go straight from the airport to Otaru on a through train.
Your IC card works all the way to Otaru. JR Hokkaido says IC cards such as Suica cannot be used beyond Otaru. If you continue to Yoichi, Kutchan or Niseko, change at Otaru and buy a ticket at your first station. Our Suica page covers the card itself, and the New Chitose Airport to Niseko bus guide covers the winter Ski Bus.

The checklist illustration above lists four things to confirm before you leave Sapporo. The last one matters most in winter, because the aquarium is at the end of the line.
Weather and crowds
The Japan Meteorological Agency Sapporo climate normals for 1991 to 2020 show how cold Sapporo gets. December averages a high of 2.0°C and a low of -4.0°C. January averages -0.4°C by day and -6.4°C at night, with 137 cm of snowfall in the month. February sits at 0.4°C and -6.2°C.
Snow lies deepest in February, at 95 cm on average in Sapporo. Wear boots with grip and pack layers. Our Japan packing list for winter and the Hokkaido in January guide go into detail.
Trains and ticket machines get crowded in busy periods, and JR suggests using an IC card to skip the queues. The busiest winter days come around New Year and the February holidays, National Foundation Day and the Emperor’s Birthday. Go on a weekday if you can.
