At the tea houses' own shops: Uji has the main stores of Horii Shichimeien, Itohkyuemon, Marukyu Koyamaen, Nakamura Tokichi and Tsuen, and Kyoto city and Tokyo have shops in stations and department stores. We list 42 shops and cafes of 15 brands and 155 teas from their official sites (checked 18 October 2026); the median is 125.1 yen per gram.

SaijoenOnline, from 8 July 2026: 3 matcha are limited to 1 item per checkout, 2 to 5 items, and 10 have no per-checkout limit (up to the stock set for each). Made-to-order matcha is also 1 item and can take up to two weeks.
IppodoSince a notice of 1 August 2025, Ippodo limits how much matcha it sells to each customer, without giving a number. Bancha teas such as hojicha have had sales limits since February 2026.
Hoshino SeichaenSome matcha brands are not sold online because of short supply (notice of 6 January 2025).
MorihanThe online shop says it sets no sales quantity limit, though items can sell out.

These are limits for online orders. Marukyu Koyamaen's factory tour page also says its factory shop limits matcha purchases. The other brands' store pages do not show limits for shoppers in person.

Ippodo's Global Online Shop lists prices in yen before tax, and the Japanese online shop lists the same 20 g boxes with the 8% tax for food. So the overseas price is the Japanese price without tax; shipping and your country's import taxes are extra.

Where can I buy matcha in Japan?

At the tea houses' own shops. Uji has main stores of Nakamura Tokichi, Itohkyuemon, Tsuen and Horii Shichimeien near Uji Station and Byodoin; Kyoto city has shops of Ippodo, Marukyu Koyamaen, Gion Tsujiri, Nakamura Tokichi and Itohkyuemon; Tokyo has Ippodo, Nakamura Tokichi, Gion Tsujiri, Morihan and Jugetsudo. This database lists 42 shops and cafes of 15 brands (checked on 18 October 2026).

Which matcha shops are open in the evening?

16 shops and cafes here stay open until 20:00 or later, for example Gion Tsujiri at Tokyo Skytree Town (11:00 to 22:00), Ippodo Shin-Marunouchi Building (11:00 to 21:00) and Gion Tsujiri Kyoto Station Hachijo-guchi (8:30 to 21:00). Shops inside department stores follow the store's hours.

Do matcha prices on Japanese shop websites include tax?

Most do: 12 of 15 brands mark their prices as including tax (Gion Tsujiri and Fukujuen each leave one item without tax wording). Marukyu Koyamaen, THE MATCHA TOKYO and Hoshino Seichaen do not say either way, on product pages or in their legal notices, so we show their prices as listed.

Which matcha brands have an English website?

9 of 15: Ippodo, Marukyu Koyamaen, Nakamura Tokichi, Gion Tsujiri, Fukujuen, Horii Shichimeien, THE MATCHA TOKYO, Jugetsudo (through Maruyama Nori) and Aiya, which runs Saijoen (company site only).

Can I order matcha from these shops from abroad?

Ippodo has a Global Online Shop that ships overseas, and Fukujuen's global shop ships from Japan. Morihan, Kanbayashi Shunsho and Hoshino Seichaen deliver only in Japan, and Marukyu Koyamaen does not ship matcha to hotels or forwarding companies.
