Where to Buy Matcha in Kyoto: 12 Shops by Area, Plus Uji
Our matcha shops database covers 42 shops and cafes across Japan, taken from each brand’s own store pages on 17 and 18 October 2026. The 12 in Kyoto city belong to 6 brands. They are Gion Tsujiri, Ippodo, Itohkyuemon, Marukyu Koyamaen, Nakamura Tokichi and Nanaya.
We grouped the Kyoto city shops by the nearest station area. Kyoto Station has 5, Shijo, Kawaramachi and Gion has 4, and Teramachi, Karasuma Oike and Sanjo has 3. The guide below lets you look up your area and see how many shops are close by.

Uji has the largest group. It sits south of Kyoto, and five tea houses keep their main stores there, near Uji Station and Byodoin. If you are short on time, the shops at Kyoto Station and on Shijo-dori are the quickest to reach. The chart compares the four areas side by side.

| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Uji | 8 shops |
| Kyoto Station | 5 shops |
| Shijo, Kawaramachi, Gion | 4 shops |
| Teramachi, Oike, Sanjo | 3 shops |
Uji leads with 8, then Kyoto Station with 5. Each bar counts shops and cafes that a brand lists on its own official store pages.
Matcha at Kyoto Station
Kyoto Station is the easiest place to buy Kyoto matcha before a train. Five shops and cafes in our list are in or next to the station. Three brands run them: Nakamura Tokichi, Gion Tsujiri and Itohkyuemon.

Two Nakamura Tokichi counters are inside JR Kyoto Isetan, the department store at the station. The table gives each shop’s location and its listed hours.
| Shop | Where | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Nakamura Tokichi Kyoto | JR Kyoto Isetan, 3rd floor | 11:00–21:00 (cafe to 22:00) |
| Nakamura Tokichi JR Kyoto Isetan | JR Kyoto Isetan, basement 1 | Same as JR Kyoto Isetan |
| Gion Tsujiri Kyoto Station Hachijo-guchi | Hachijo side, 1st floor, by the Shinkansen gate | 8:30–21:00 |
| Saryo Tsujiri Kyoto Isetan (cafe) | Kyoto Isetan | 10:00–20:00 |
| Itohkyuemon Kyoto Station | By exit C5 of the Porta underground mall | 10:30–18:30 |
The Nakamura Tokichi official store list puts the Kyoto store on the 3rd-floor restaurant floor of JR Kyoto Isetan. It faces the JR West Exit gate. Its tea counter opens 11:00 to 21:00. The cafe next to it stays open until 22:00, with last orders at 21:00. The second counter, on basement 1, follows JR Kyoto Isetan’s hours and has no cafe.
Gion Tsujiri has the longest hours in our Kyoto list. Its Hachijo-guchi shop opens at 8:30 and closes at 21:00. Inside the station, follow the signs for 八条口 (Hachijo-guchi, “Hachijo exit”). The Gion Tsujiri Kyoto Station Hachijo-guchi store page places it on the 1st floor of the Hachijo side. It is two doors to the right of the Shinkansen gate. It closes on irregular days and takes cash, credit cards and QR payments.
Saryo Tsujiri, the brand’s cafe, has a branch at Kyoto Isetan that opens 10:00 to 20:00. Go there if you want to sit down at a cafe before you shop. The Gion Tsujiri page in our database lists its teas and prices.
The Itohkyuemon Kyoto Station store page lists hours of 10:30 to 18:30. The shop is a 3-minute walk from the JR and subway stations, 5 minutes from the Kintetsu station and 1 minute from Kyoto Tower. It sits right by exit C5 of the Porta underground mall. It closes on 1 and 2 January and on some irregular days.
All Itohkyuemon shops close on Wednesday 21 October 2026 for a company event. Plan around that date if this brand is on your list.

So the station window runs from 8:30 to 21:00, and both ends belong to Gion Tsujiri Hachijo-guchi. Marukyu Koyamaen also lists its own counter on basement 1 of JR Kyoto Isetan, open 10:00 to 20:00.
Shijo, Kawaramachi and Gion
Four shops in our list are along Shijo-dori. They sit between Kyoto-kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu line and Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan line.

Gion Tsujiri and Itohkyuemon both have shops on Shijo-dori in Gion. The list below covers all four, with the closest station for each.
- Nakamura Tokichi Daimaru Kyoto: basement 1 food floor of Daimaru Kyoto, on Shijo-dori at Takakura. Same hours as Daimaru Kyoto.
- Nakamura Tokichi Shijo: Kyoto Takashimaya S.C. T8, 3rd floor. Linked to Kyoto-kawaramachi Station. Open 10:30–20:00.
- Gion Tsujiri Gion main store: Shijo-dori in Gion, 3 min from exit 6 of Gion-Shijo Station. Open 10:30–21:00.
- Itohkyuemon Gion Shijo: Shijo-dori at Yamato-oji, 1 min from exit 6 of Gion-Shijo Station. Open 10:30–18:30.
Nakamura Tokichi’s Shijo store is on the 3rd floor of Kyoto Takashimaya S.C. T8. It opens at 10:30, a time that started on 1 August 2026 when the building changed its hours. The shop and cafe both close at 20:00, and the cafe takes last orders at 19:00. From Kyoto Station, city buses 4, 5, 17 and 205 leave from stop A2 and take about 15 minutes.
The Daimaru Kyoto counter is on the basement food floor. It follows the department store’s hours and has no cafe.
The Gion Tsujiri Gion main store page lists 10:30 to 21:00, with soft-serve orders until 20:00. The shop is 3 minutes from exit 6 of Gion-Shijo Station. It closes on irregular days and warns that hours can change without notice.
The Itohkyuemon Gion Shijo store page gives 10:30 to 18:30. Walk 1 minute from exit 6 of Gion-Shijo Station, or about 4 minutes from exit 1 of Kawaramachi Station. Upstairs, a tea room on the 2nd floor has 42 seats and takes last orders at 18:00. It does not take phone bookings, so you join the queue in person.
Itohkyuemon’s store pages also list shops at Kiyomizu Sannenzaka, Sanjo Teramachi, Fushimi Inari and Nishiki Takakura. Nishiki Takakura is the newest; it opened on 1 September 2026. See the Itohkyuemon page in our database for its prices and Uji shops.
Marukyu Koyamaen also runs a counter on basement 1 of Kyoto Takashimaya, open 10:00 to 20:00. For a full list of Nakamura Tokichi shops, see the Nakamura Tokichi page in our database.
Teramachi, Karasuma Oike and Sanjo
This area has three shops: Ippodo on Teramachi-dori, Marukyu Koyamaen near Karasuma Oike and Nanaya in Sanjo.

Ippodo keeps its Kyoto main store on Teramachi-dori. Look for the shop curtain printed with 茶 一保堂 (cha Ippodo, “tea, Ippodo”).
The Ippodo Tea Kyoto main store page lists 10:00 to 17:00 for both the shop and the Kaboku tea room. The tea room has 44 seats and takes last orders at 16:30. The store closes on the second Wednesday of each month.
From the subway, walk 5 minutes from exit 11 of Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station or 10 minutes from exit 7 of Marutamachi Station. Exit 12 of Keihan Sanjo Station is also 10 minutes away. The Kamo River and the Kyoto Imperial Palace are about 5 minutes on foot.
Inside, a large counter faces you, and old tea jars line the left wall. You can also buy a takeaway matcha for 972 yen. Ippodo pays by cash, credit card or smartphone. The Ippodo page in our database lists 11 of its teas with prices.
Marukyu Koyamaen’s Kyoto shop is on Nishinotoin-dori, south of Oike. The Marukyu Koyamaen Nishinotoin shop and Motoan page gives shop hours of 9:30 to 18:00. Its Motoan tea room takes last orders at 17:00 and closes at 17:30.
Motoan has 13 seats, and the shop also has a small two-mat tea room where you can order from the menu. Staff do not perform a formal tea ceremony there. A bowl of thin matcha with a sweet starts at 1,595 yen, with the 10% tax included. The shop closes every Wednesday, on the 3rd Tuesday and over New Year.
Walk about 500 m, or 6 minutes, from exit 4-1 of Karasuma Oike Station or exit 2 of Nijojo-mae Station. Marukyu Koyamaen also runs a 2,200 yen class on how to whisk matcha, but it has paused bookings for now. Its Marukyu Koyamaen page in our database covers its online order rules.
The third Kyoto matcha shop here is Nanaya Kyoto Sanjo. Nanaya belongs to Marushichi Seicha, a tea company from Shizuoka, and its cheapest tea in our list costs 540 yen.
Uji: the tea houses’ main stores
Uji has 8 shops in our list. Five brands keep their main stores there: Horii Shichimeien, Itohkyuemon, Marukyu Koyamaen, Nakamura Tokichi and Tsuen.
The fastest way there is the JR Miyakoji Rapid from Kyoto Station to Uji Station: 17 minutes at the fastest, for 240 yen. The first train leaves Kyoto Station at 05:33 and the last at 23:46. Some rapid trains also sell a reserved seat for 530 yen extra. The Kyoto to Uji route page has the full times and fares.
Uji shops close earlier than those in Kyoto city. Horii Shichimeien’s head-office shop opens 10:00 to 16:30. The Nakamura Tokichi main store sells tea from 10:00 to 17:30, and Tsuen opens 10:30 to 17:30 every day. Itohkyuemon’s Uji main store and its JR Uji Station shop both stay open until 18:00.
Itohkyuemon’s JR Uji Station shop is about 1 minute from the station. Its Byodoin shop opens 9:30 to 17:30. Marukyu Koyamaen’s head-office shop opens 9:00 to 17:00 and closes on Sundays, public holidays and some Saturdays.
Marukyu Koyamaen also runs a 90-minute matcha factory tour for ¥1,000 per adult. It runs on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for groups of 2 to 10 people. Book at least a week ahead. The factory shop also limits how much matcha you can buy.
Uji makes sense if you want to see the main stores and Byodoin in one trip. If you only need a tin or two, the Kyoto city shops also sell Itohkyuemon, Marukyu Koyamaen and Nakamura Tokichi tea.
