Lowest adult price on each operator's own page, checked 17 and 18 October 2026. Per 45 minutes is our calculation: price times 45, divided by the minutes the operator gives (the middle of a range). Entry fees to a museum, temple or garden are not added. Rows without a length have no set time on the operator's page.
Many operators change prices by season or date, and some charge one person more. The table shows the lowest adult price each lists. Check the operator's page before you book.

Kyoto has the most plans, 18 from 13 operators, and a median of ¥4,125 per 45 minutes. Tokyo's median is ¥4,286; its two hotel tea rooms charge ¥5,000 to ¥10,000. Uji is cheaper, ¥2,794, because most of its plans are short hands-on sessions such as grinding matcha with a stone mill.
21 of the 44 plans say the session is run in English.

Our count: the plans run in English cost a median of ¥4,500 per 45 minutes (19 plans with a length), against ¥2,700 for the others (19 plans). Plans run in English include Koto, Camellia, MAIKOYA, WAK JAPAN, Chazen and The Osaka. Most temple, museum and city tea house plans do not say they are in English.
12 of the 44 plans can seat you on a chair.
- Koto, Kyoto (2 plans): Tatami room, with 5 chairs for guests who cannot sit on the floor
- Camellia, Kyoto (2 plans): A few chairs and tables on request; the tea rooms are upstairs
- Camellia, Kyoto (Private, Garden Teahouse): Tables and chairs for every guest, up to 10 people
- MAIKOYA Nishiki, Kyoto (Shared, with kimono): Tatami room; chairs on request if free
- Chado Research Center, Kyoto (Tea seating at the museum): Ryurei style: you sit on a chair at a table

- Chazen, Tokyo (2 plans): Tatami room, with chairs for those who need them
- Taihoan, Uji (Make matcha yourself): A western-style room with tables and chairs, about 8 people
A tea ceremony on chairs at a table is called ryurei. The Chado Research Center in Kyoto and Taihoan's tea-making room in Uji are ryurei rooms, and Camellia's Garden Teahouse has tables and chairs for every guest. At the others the room is tatami and chairs are brought for guests who need them, so ask when you book.
4 plans include a kimono, 6 let you add one, and 4 do not offer one.

Not every plan is a full tea ceremony. Some serve a bowl of tea, and some let you grind matcha or walk in the tea fields.
