Haneda to Sapporo Flights: 56 a Day, Terminals and Bags
The flight is the short part of the trip. You also pick an airport, find the right terminal, beat a bag deadline and catch a train into the city. This guide walks through each step in that order, with the numbers the airports and airlines publish.
Every fact here comes from the airports’ and airlines’ own pages. Our Tokyo to Sapporo route comparison counts the flights on the airport timetables. Flight times do not include getting to the airport, so add that yourself before you compare a plane with a train.
Haneda to Sapporo flights by airline and terminal
Four airlines fly from Haneda to New Chitose, the Sapporo airport: ANA, JAL, AIRDO and Skymark. You can see all four on the Haneda Airport list of airlines for domestic flights. The New Chitose Airport airlines page lists the same four, and all of them check in on 2F of the Domestic Terminal Building in Hokkaido.
At Haneda, the airline decides the terminal. JAL and Skymark use Haneda Airport Terminal 1, which they share with StarFlyer and Japan Transocean Air. ANA and AIRDO use Haneda Airport Terminal 2, which also serves Solaseed Air. The two terminals are separate buildings, so go straight to the right one.
Look at the operating airline on your booking. That name, not the website you booked on, decides your terminal. Some AIRDO flights also carry an ANA flight number. Both airlines check in at Terminal 2, so a shared flight still leaves from the same building.

The photo above shows the domestic side of Terminal 2, where ANA and AIRDO passengers drop their bags. The station sits under the building on B1F: Haneda Airport Terminal 2 Station on the Tokyo Monorail and Terminal 1·2 Station on the Keikyu Line. The domestic areas open at 05:00 and close at midnight.
Haneda is close to the city. Our Haneda Airport guide lists 13 minutes and 520 yen from Hamamatsucho, and 15 minutes and 330 yen from Shinagawa. The first flight to New Chitose leaves at 06:20 and the last at 21:30. You can fly in the morning or after a full day in Tokyo.
It compares the two big carriers, the two smaller Haneda airlines and the Narita low-cost airlines.
ANA and JAL are Japan’s two largest airlines. AIRDO and Skymark fly the same route from the same airport, and their cabin bag limits match ANA and JAL. For most visitors the choice comes down to the departure time, the fare and the terminal that is easier to reach from your hotel.
Narita to Sapporo: where the low-cost flights leave
Narita Airport has 17 flights a day to New Chitose, and each takes 1 h 45 min. That is 15 minutes longer than from Haneda. Peach, Jetstar Japan and Spring Japan, the three low-cost airlines on the New Chitose list, fly from Narita rather than Haneda.
Jetstar Japan and Spring Japan check in at Narita Airport Terminal 3. This terminal has no train station. Walk about 13 minutes from the ticket gates of Airport Terminal 2 Station. The free shuttle bus takes about 3 minutes. Check the terminal printed on your booking before you leave the hotel, because Narita has three of them.

The building in the photo is Terminal 3. Its 1F arrivals and 2F departures lobbies stay open 24 hours, and the LAWSON and Matsuya on 2F serve food all night. Flights only run from 06:00 to midnight, so you wait in the lobby, not past security. Coin lockers start at 300 yen. The Narita Airport official site has a floor map and a live departures search for the day you fly.
Now add the trip to the airport. Our Narita Airport guide lists 53 minutes and 3,140 yen from Tokyo Station. The same trip to Haneda from Hamamatsucho takes 13 minutes and costs 520 yen. A cheap seat from Narita can lose its lead once you add that train, the longer flight and a paid checked bag.
Two questions settle it for most people.
If everything fits in a 7 kg cabin bag and you stay near Narita or on the Keisei line, a low-cost flight makes sense. If you carry winter gear, or you stay near Shinagawa or Hamamatsucho, Haneda usually wins on time and total cost. Our guide to full-service and low-cost airlines in Japan covers the fare types in more detail.
Checked bags and carry-on limits by airline
Cabin bags split the airlines into two groups. ANA, JAL, AIRDO and Skymark allow 10 kg in the cabin. Peach, Jetstar Japan and Spring Japan allow 7 kg. Winter coats, boots and a laptop add up fast, so weigh your bag before you choose an airline.
The ANA domestic flights baggage page sets the rule clearly. You may bring two items: one carry-on bag and one personal item. On planes with 100 seats or more, the carry-on bag must be within 115 cm in total, or 55 × 40 × 25 cm. On planes with fewer than 100 seats, the limit is 100 cm, or 45 × 35 × 20 cm. From July 1, 2026, the personal item must fit within 40 × 30 × 20 cm. The 10 kg limit covers both items together.
The AIRDO baggage page allows 1 piece of baggage in the cabin aside from personal effects. Our AIRDO baggage allowance page lists the same 115 cm and 10 kg as ANA, with a 40 × 30 × 20 cm personal item. The Skymark Airlines baggage page links to its cabin and checked bag rules. Our airline data shows Skymark at 115 cm and 10 kg as well.
| Airline | Tokyo airport | Cabin bag size | Cabin weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| ANA | Haneda Terminal 2 | 115 cm (55 × 40 × 25 cm) | 10 kg |
| JAL | Haneda Terminal 1 | 115 cm (55 × 40 × 25 cm) | 10 kg |
| AIRDO | Haneda Terminal 2 | 115 cm (55 × 40 × 25 cm) | 10 kg |
| Skymark | Haneda Terminal 1 | 115 cm (55 × 40 × 25 cm) | 10 kg |
| Jetstar Japan | Narita Terminal 3 | 56 × 36 × 23 cm | 7 kg |
| Spring Japan | Narita Terminal 3 | 56 × 36 × 23 cm | 7 kg |
| Peach | Narita | 115 cm | 7 kg |
The table shows that the low-cost limits are tighter in weight. Jetstar Japan and Spring Japan also set the bag at 56 × 36 × 23 cm. Our Peach carry-on size page shows its 7 kg limit. On the cheapest low-cost fares, no checked bag is included, so you pay for each one you add.
Checked bags work differently on the larger airlines. A standard fare on ANA, JAL, AIRDO or Skymark includes free checked baggage. On AIRDO, the free allowance depends on the fare, and package-tour fares include only 1 free piece.
Two more rules matter in winter. First, power banks. ANA does not accept them in checked bags and allows up to 2 per person at 160 Wh or less. Tape the terminals or keep each one in a plastic bag. You may not charge a power bank from the seat outlet. AIRDO uses the same 160 Wh limit. Second, sharp items such as scissors and knives must go in a checked bag.
The bag drop deadline is earlier than many visitors expect. From Sep 1, 2026, AIRDO closes bag check-in at Haneda 30 minutes before departure, and Skymark also closes at 30 minutes at Haneda. AIRDO has automated bag drop machines at Haneda and New Chitose. For ANA, open our ANA check-in deadline page before you leave the hotel.
Is your ski bag too heavy to carry around Sapporo? ANA and AIRDO both offer Kaisoku Takku-bin, a home delivery service. It sends your bag from the airport to an address you choose. At New Chitose, Yamato Transport also has counters on 1F and 2F of the domestic terminal.
Flying vs the Shinkansen to Sapporo
The train takes much longer. Our route data shows the Hayabusa Shinkansen and the Limited Express Hokuto taking 7 h 45 min from Tokyo Station. The fare is 30,120 yen, with a change at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. The flight from Haneda takes 1 h 30 min.
| Way to go | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Flight from Haneda | 1 h 30 min | 56 flights a day, first 06:20, last 21:30 |
| Flight from Narita | 1 h 45 min | 17 flights a day, low-cost airlines |
| Hayabusa + Hokuto | 7 h 45 min | 30,120 yen from Tokyo Station, one change |
The flight times leave out the trip to the airport and the train into Sapporo. Add 13 minutes from Hamamatsucho to Haneda, the bag deadline, and 33 minutes from New Chitose to Sapporo Station. The air trip is still hours shorter than the 7 h 45 min train ride. The five steps below show the whole trip by air.

A rail pass changes the sums only on the train side. Our Japan Rail Pass guide shows that it covers JR Shinkansen except the Nozomi and Mizuho, so the Hayabusa and the Hokuto are included. The JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass also covers JR East lines and JR Hokkaido lines around Hakodate, Sapporo and Otaru. No JR pass covers a flight.
If you fly in, a pass can still help after you land. The Hokkaido Rail Pass covers all JR Hokkaido lines except the Hokkaido Shinkansen, so it covers the Rapid Airport from New Chitose. Choose the train from Tokyo if you want to see Tohoku and Hakodate on the way. Choose the plane if you want the most time in Sapporo.
New Chitose Airport to Sapporo Station
The JR Rapid Airport is the fastest way into the city. Our New Chitose Airport to Sapporo transfer guide lists 33 minutes and 1,230 yen to Sapporo Station, with no change of train. The New Chitose Airport access by JR page gives about 30 minutes to Sapporo without transfers.
JR New Chitose Airport Station is on B1F of the terminal building. From the domestic arrivals area, go to the Center Plaza on 2F and follow the signs down by escalator or elevator. The airport page has a short video of the route. If you land on an international flight, walk through the connecting passage to the domestic building first.

The train in the photo is a Rapid Airport, the line that links the airport with Sapporo. The same JR page lists longer trips. Asahikawa takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes with a change in Sapporo. Hakodate takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes with a change at Minami-Chitose.
Buses take longer but drop you closer to some hotels. The New Chitose Airport access by bus page lists Hokuto Kotsu and Chuo Bus services to central Sapporo. In our airport data, the city centre line takes 74 minutes and the direct bus takes 63 minutes, both for 1,500 yen. At the domestic terminal, buses for central Sapporo leave from stops 14 and 22 on 1F. At the international terminal, use stop 84.
Two signs help you find the bus. Look for バスのりば (basu noriba), which means bus stop. The destination 札幌都心 (Sapporo toshin) means central Sapporo. Buses also leave from stop 21 for Jozankei Onsen, and the ski bus to Niseko and Rusutsu leaves from stop 12, in winter only.

| Item | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| JR Rapid Airport | 33 min | 1,230 yen |
| Airport bus, direct | 63 min | 1,500 yen |
| Airport bus, city centre line | 74 min | 1,500 yen |
The chart compares the three ways in: the train at 33 minutes against 63 and 74 minutes by bus. Pick the bus if your hotel is near a stop on the route and you want to stay seated with your bags.
New Chitose has coin lockers from 400 yen a day in 3 sizes. The Hokkaido Tourist Information Center is on 2F of the international terminal and helps in several languages. Our New Chitose Airport guide covers lockers and other services.
| Place | New Chitose Airport |
|---|---|
| Price | JR Rapid Airport to Sapporo Station 1,230 yen; airport bus to central Sapporo 1,500 yen |
| Access | JR New Chitose Airport Station on B1F of the terminal; Sapporo Station 33 min by Rapid Airport |

Booking winter flights: New Year and Snow Festival dates
Winter seats to Sapporo sell out first around two events. Our New Year 2026-27 holiday guide shows New Year’s Day on Friday 1 January 2027, when people across Japan travel home. The Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 guide runs from 4 to 11 February at Odori, Tsudome and Susukino, and entry is free.

Hotels and flights for those dates go fast, so book the flight and the hotel together if you can. For the New Year, avoid flying on the days just before and after 1 January if your dates are flexible.
AIRDO sells several fare types on its booking form: DO Sale, DO Youth 25 and DO Senior 65, along with regular fares. You can book up to nine seats at once. Children are 2 to 11, and infants are 0 to 1, by age on the day of the flight.
Before the day you fly, run through four checks.
First, confirm the terminal. JAL and Skymark use Haneda Terminal 1, ANA and AIRDO use Terminal 2, and Jetstar Japan and Spring Japan use Narita Terminal 3. Second, note the bag deadline, which is 30 minutes before departure at Haneda on AIRDO and Skymark. Third, weigh your cabin bag against the 10 kg or 7 kg limit. Fourth, plan the train: the Rapid Airport takes 33 minutes from New Chitose to Sapporo Station.
Snow can delay flights in Hokkaido in winter. Give yourself a buffer if you have a train, a tour or a connecting flight on the same day.
FAQ
How long is the flight from Haneda to Sapporo?
The flight from Haneda to New Chitose Airport takes 1 h 30 min. The airport timetables list 56 flights a day, the first at 06:20 and the last at 21:30. Add 33 minutes on the Rapid Airport to reach Sapporo Station.
Which terminal at Haneda do flights to Sapporo leave from?
It depends on the airline. JAL and Skymark leave from Terminal 1, and ANA and AIRDO leave from Terminal 2. Check the operating airline on your booking, because that name sets the terminal.
Is it cheaper to fly to Sapporo from Narita or Haneda?
Low-cost fares from Narita are often lower, but the trip to the airport costs more. Tokyo Station to Narita is 53 minutes and 3,140 yen, while Hamamatsucho to Haneda is 13 minutes and 520 yen. A paid checked bag and the 7 kg cabin limit can also close the gap.
Can I use the JR Pass to get from Tokyo to Sapporo?
Yes, on the train. The Japan Rail Pass covers the Hayabusa and the Limited Express Hokuto, a trip of 7 h 45 min from Tokyo Station. It does not cover flights. If you fly, the Hokkaido Rail Pass covers the Rapid Airport from New Chitose.
