Japan Rail Pass: price, what it covers and is it worth it
The Japan Rail Pass costs 50,000 yen for 7 days, Ordinary Car, on the official website; children pay 25,000 yen. Two types (Green Car and Standard Car), each for 7, 14 or 21 days. All JR Group trains: Shinkansen (except the Nozomi and Mizuho), limited express, express, rapid and local trains, and the BRT.

Children aged 6 to 11 at the time of use pay the child price; 12-year-olds count as adults.
What the pass covers
- All JR Group trains: Shinkansen (except the Nozomi and Mizuho), limited express, express, rapid and local trains, and the BRT.
- The Tokyo Monorail.
- Local JR Bus routes (not JR express bus routes).
- The JR West Miyajima ferry (the 100 yen Miyajima Visitor Tax is paid separately).
Not covered
- Any seat on the Nozomi and Mizuho on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen.
- Private railway sections that JR trains run through, such as the Fujikyu Railway on the Fuji Excursion or the Izukyu line on the Odoriko to Shimoda.
- JR Bus express routes.
- Gran Class: the limited express charge and the Gran Class charge are paid separately.
Nozomi and Mizuho trains
To ride the Nozomi or Mizuho, buy the special NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket for your section before boarding; otherwise ride the Hikari, Sakura, Kodama or Tsubame.

- Tokyo to Mt Fuji by Limited Express Azusa + Fujikyu Line: Covers the Limited Express Azusa to Otsuki; the Fujikyu Line to Kawaguchiko is paid separately.
- Tokyo to Hakone by Kodama + Hakone Tozan: Covers the Kodama to Odawara; the Hakone Tozan Train is paid separately.
- Kyoto to Mt Fuji by Hikari + bus: Covers the Hikari to Mishima; the Fujikyu highway bus is paid separately.

Where to buy it
- Buy online on the official website (JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation) with your passport and a credit card.
- Pick up the pass in Japan at a JR ticket office or a reserved seat ticket machine, showing the passport with the Temporary Visitor stamp.
- Travel agents abroad sell an Exchange Order, which you swap for the pass at a major JR station within three months of its issue.
- Who can buy it
- Only foreign tourists who enter Japan with the Temporary Visitor status can use the pass.
Seats and using the pass
- Seats
- Reserved seats cost nothing extra; book them at a ticket machine, a JR ticket office or, for online buyers, on the official website.
- Go through the automatic ticket gates with the pass, or show it at a staffed gate.
- Carry your passport while you use the pass.
Refunds
Refunds are only possible before the first day of use, for a fee of 560 yen per pass (10% of the price for passes from an overseas Exchange Order).
Good to know
- The pass cannot be reissued if it is lost or stolen.
- The special NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket is sold from one month before the day of travel, at reserved seat ticket machines and JR ticket offices.
