7-Eleven ATM in Japan: the short answer

A 7-Eleven ATM in Japan pays out up to 100,000 yen per withdrawal on a foreign card, and Visa and Mastercard work 24 hours (Seven Bank, checked 17 October 2026). UnionPay, JCB and Discover stop for 20 minutes a day, from 23:50 to 00:10.

  • Limit: 100,000 yen per withdrawal, or 30,000 yen if the ATM reads your card by its magnetic stripe.
  • Hours: Visa and Mastercard run 00:00 to 24:00. The other five brands switch off for 10 to 20 minutes around midnight.
  • Fee: It differs by card brand, and where one applies it is charged for each withdrawal.
  • Where: More than 28,000 Seven Bank ATMs in Japan, in 7-Eleven stores, airports and train stations.

The cash machines inside 7-Eleven stores belong to Seven Bank. So when people say “7-Eleven ATM”, the rules they need are Seven Bank’s rules for cards issued abroad. Every number in this guide comes from Seven Bank or Seven-Eleven Japan, read on 17 October 2026, plus our own counts from those pages.

Seven Bank accepts cards with any of 10 marks, and the screen works in 12 languages. You pick English, enter your PIN and choose an amount. Three details trip people up. They are the limit per withdrawal, the short break around midnight for some brands, and the currency question for Visa and Mastercard.

This guide covers taking cash out of the machine. Paying at the 7-Eleven till is a separate system with its own list of cards and apps. Our 7-Eleven Japan payments database covers it card by card.

The photo below shows a 7-Eleven store in Japan. Look for the Seven Bank ATM inside, but 7-Eleven says not every store has one.

How much can you take out at a 7-Eleven ATM?

The most you can take out in one withdrawal with a card issued abroad is 100,000 yen. The Seven Bank cards issued abroad: limits and hours page sets that figure. The limit falls to 30,000 yen when the ATM handles your card through its magnetic stripe.

The illustration sums up those two figures. The bigger one is your ceiling for a single transaction.

The most you can take out at one time. 100,000yen. Per withdrawal with a card issued abroad.
The most you can take out at one time

The limit applies to each withdrawal. If you need more cash than one withdrawal allows, you make a second withdrawal. Seven Bank gives the same advice when an amount is too high: lower the amount and run the transaction again.

Each withdrawal counts as its own transaction for fees too. The Seven Bank how to use cards issued abroad page says that where a fee applies, it is charged for the number of transactions. So two withdrawals mean two fees, where your card brand has a fee.

If your withdrawal is refused at an amount under 100,000 yen, the machine may be reading the stripe. Try again with an amount of 30,000 yen or less, or use another card.

You choose the amount in Japanese yen on the screen. The machine pays out Japanese yen, and yen is also the only cash the 7-Eleven till accepts. The photo shows a Seven Bank ATM in a Tokyo building in July 2025.

Seven Bank ATM hours by card brand

Seven Bank ATMs work 365 days a year in principle. Within each day, the hours depend on your card brand. Visa cards, including the PLUS network, run from 00:00 to 24:00. Mastercard cards, including Maestro and Cirrus, also run from 00:00 to 24:00.

The other five brands switch off for a short time around midnight. The table copies Seven Bank’s hours for each brand and adds the daily break we counted from them.

Card brand Daily hours Daily break
Visa and PLUS 00:00–24:00 None
Mastercard, Maestro and Cirrus 00:00–24:00 None
UnionPay 00:10–23:50 20 minutes
American Express 00:05–23:50 15 minutes
JCB 00:10–23:50 20 minutes
Discover 00:10–23:50 20 minutes
Diners Club 00:05–23:55 10 minutes
Seven Bank ATM hours for cards issued abroad — Hours from Seven Bank’s table; the daily break is our count from those hours (checked 17 October 2026).

We counted the break from the start and end times on Seven Bank’s table. UnionPay, JCB and Discover all start at 00:10 and stop at 23:50, so each is off for 20 minutes a day. American Express runs from 00:05 to 23:50, a gap of 15 minutes. Diners Club runs from 00:05 to 23:55, a gap of 10 minutes.

The bar chart puts those breaks side by side. Visa and Mastercard sit at zero, and the longest bars belong to UnionPay, JCB and Discover.

Minutes a day each card brand cannot be used
Visa includes PLUS; Mastercard includes Maestro and Cirrus. Neither switches off; the other five brands stop around midnight.
Item Value Note
Visa 0 minutes
Mastercard 0 minutes
UnionPay 20 minutes 23:50 to 00:10
American Express 15 minutes 23:50 to 00:05
JCB 20 minutes 23:50 to 00:10
Discover 20 minutes 23:50 to 00:10
Diners Club 10 minutes 23:55 to 00:05

In practice, plan around one window. If your card is not Visa or Mastercard, avoid 23:50 to 00:10. A JCB card at 23:55 falls inside the break, and the same card works again from 00:10. An American Express card is back from 00:05, and so is a Diners Club card.

The same midnight breaks sit next to each card brand in our payments database, along with how each card pays at the till.

Two more things can stop a machine. Seven Bank says ATMs may be unavailable during system maintenance. And some airport ATMs keep shorter hours, which we list in the section on airports below.

Which cards work, and is there a fee?

Seven Bank takes cards issued abroad with any of 10 marks: VISA, PLUS, Mastercard, Maestro, Cirrus, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Discover and Diners Club. The Seven-Eleven Japan visitor FAQ gives VISA, Mastercard, PLUS and Cirrus as examples of overseas cards that withdraw yen at these machines.

A mark on the card is a good sign, but Seven Bank says some cards with these marks are still refused. Carry a second card from a different brand if you can.

On fees, Seven Bank says the ATM fee for cards issued abroad differs by card brand. It does not list the amounts on its card page. What it does state is that a fee, where one applies, is charged for each withdrawal.

The currency question (DCC)

Visa and Mastercard holders see one extra screen. Seven Bank calls it the Dynamic Currency Conversion Service, or DCC. You choose whether the withdrawal is billed in your home currency or in Japanese yen.

The Seven Bank guide to withdrawing Japanese yen explains the difference. If you pick your home currency, you know the amount in that currency at the ATM. If you pick yen, the withdrawal is settled in yen, and the amount in your currency is fixed later, when the bill comes.

JCB, Discover, UnionPay, American Express and Diners Club cards cannot use DCC. So of the 7 card brands on Seven Bank’s list, only 2 see this choice. Seven Bank describes both options side by side, and the choice is yours.

The chart below sums up the two things that change what you see at the machine: your card brand, and whether the ATM reads the stripe.

Visa or Mastercard: choose home currency or yen. Other brands: settled in yen. Card read by stripe: 30,000 yen limit

UnionPay and Travel Wallet

UnionPay cards work at Seven Bank ATMs from 00:10 to 23:50. At the till the rule is different: only UnionPay credit cards are accepted there, as our UnionPay at 7-Eleven page explains. For questions in Chinese, Seven Bank gives a UnionPay help desk number: 00531-086-0044.

South Korea’s Travel Wallet says on its own site that its card withdraws local currency at VISA ATMs. Seven Bank takes Visa from 00:00 to 24:00, up to 100,000 yen each time. Our Travel Wallet at 7-Eleven page covers the ATM and paying at the till.

How to withdraw yen at a 7-Eleven ATM, step by step

The photo shows a corner of Seven Bank ATMs in Japan. Insert your card and the guidance starts on its own.

Seven Bank’s guide walks through a withdrawal with a Visa card in eight steps. Here they are in order.

  1. Insert your card with the magnetic stripe facing down.
  2. Choose your language. The screen offers 12: Japanese, English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Thai, Malay, Indonesian, Vietnamese, French, German and Portuguese.
  3. Select the Withdrawal button.
  4. Select the account you are withdrawing from.
  5. Enter your PIN and press Confirm.
  6. Select the amount in Japanese yen, up to 100,000 yen.
  7. Visa and Mastercard only: choose the currency for your bill (DCC).
  8. Take your cash, then your card and the receipt.

The flow chart shortens those eight steps to the five where you act or choose.

The ATM screen and the receipt both use the language you picked. If you tap Japanese by mistake, look for お引出し (ohikidashi), the Japanese label Seven Bank uses for the withdrawal button. It means “withdrawal”.

If you get a PIN error, Seven Bank tells you to contact the company that issued the card.

Topping up a transit card with cash

The same machines also take cash. The Seven-Eleven Japan Seven Bank ATM service page says Seven Bank ATMs can top up transit IC e-money and some phone payment apps with cash. Seven Bank’s guide shows a Suica top-up, including the Welcome Suica card from JR East, in steps of 1,000 yen. Our IC card top-up guide lists the other places to add money to a Suica card.

Where to find a Seven Bank ATM: stores, airports and FamilyMart

Seven Bank has more than 28,000 ATMs in Japan. They stand in 7-Eleven stores and also at airports and train stations. Seven-Eleven Japan says not every one of its stores has an ATM, so you can walk into a 7-Eleven that has none. Seven Bank’s website has an English ATM Locator for finding the nearest machine.

FamilyMart stores from June 2026

From June 2026, Seven Bank has been installing its ATMs in FamilyMart stores one by one. The Seven Bank ATMs at FamilyMart stores page says these machines offer the same functions and services as other Seven Bank ATMs. That page also lists cash withdrawals in yen with cards issued abroad among the services.

Seven Bank ATMs at airports

We checked our own airport database, version of 14 October 2026. Of its 40 airport pages, 37 have an ATM row, and 18 of those 37 name a Seven Bank ATM. These are the 18:

  • New Chitose Airport, Fukushima Airport, Sendai Airport, Haneda Airport, Ibaraki Airport and Chubu Centrair Airport.
  • Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport, Itami Airport, Yonago Kitaro Airport, Matsuyama Airport, Tokushima Awaodori Airport and Fukuoka Airport.
  • Kagoshima Airport, Kitakyushu Airport, Kumamoto Airport, Miyazaki Airport, Nagasaki Airport and Naha Airport.

Six of them have more detail on the airports’ own pages.

  • Haneda: Terminal 3 arrivals (2F) has a Seven Bank ATM open 5:00 to midnight. Terminal 2 international arrivals (2F) has one open 6:00 to 23:00. See our Haneda Airport page.
  • Chubu Centrair: Seven Bank in the 2F departures lobby, open 04:40 to 21:20. See our Chubu Centrair Airport page.
  • New Chitose: Seven Bank, AEON Bank and North Pacific Bank, and the airport says these ATMs take cards issued abroad. See our New Chitose Airport page.
  • Fukuoka: Seven Bank among five banks, on B1F, 1F and 2F.
  • Itami: Seven Bank among five banks, on 1F of the North and South Terminals.
  • Naha: Seven Bank among five banks in the domestic area, on the 2F departure lobby.

At Haneda, Terminal 3 arrivals (2F) also has a Japan Post Bank ATM that runs 24 hours, except 0:00 to 7:00 on the third Monday of the month.

Our database has no ATM row yet for Narita, Kansai or Iwate Hanamaki airports. That gap is in our data, and it does not mean those airports have no ATM.

Away from airports, 7-Eleven is easy to find. By our count in the konbini by prefecture database, it has the most stores of any chain in 26 of Japan’s 47 prefectures.

If the ATM refuses your card

Run through these checks in order before you try another machine.

  • The time: UnionPay, JCB and Discover are off from 23:50 to 00:10. American Express is off from 23:50 to 00:05. Diners Club is off from 23:55 to 00:05.
  • The amount: More than 100,000 yen in one go is refused. Lower the amount and try again.
  • The stripe: If the machine reads your magnetic stripe, the limit is 30,000 yen.
  • The PIN: For a PIN error, contact the company that issued your card.
  • The card itself: Seven Bank says a card can be refused even with an accepted mark. Try a card from another brand.

The illustration matches four common situations with what to do next.

Other ways to get yen at 7-Eleven

Some 7-Eleven stores have a self-service Money Exchange Machine that changes foreign notes into yen. It takes no coins, and each exchange must be below 100,000 yen. Our money exchange machine page has the details.

At the till, cash must be Japanese yen. The Seven-Eleven Japan in-store payment page says foreign notes and coins cannot be used. Fully self-service checkouts without a cashier take no cash at all. If you have no yen and the ATM refuses your card, paying by card at the till is the other route.
