Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines announced the route on 20 October 2026. The Alaska Airlines Newsroom Seattle–Osaka and Papeete route announcement says it will be the only nonstop between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Osaka. All new routes still need government approval, and the schedule can change.

The intro fare window is short. It opened on the day of the announcement and closes on 26 October 2026. The timeline below sets out the sale window, the first flight in each direction and the planned cabin refresh.

What is new: the first Seattle–Kansai nonstop on Alaska and Hawaiian

Kansai Airports calls KIX the airline’s third destination in Asia. The other two on the Seattle long-haul network are Tokyo and Seoul. Osaka and Papeete become the eighth and ninth long-haul intercontinental routes from Seattle, alongside London, Rome and Reykjavík, with Athens and Paris announced.

Hawaiian Airlines will fly the route under its own brand on an Airbus A330-200. Hawaiian and Alaska both belong to Alaska Air Group, so you can book on either airline’s website. Our Hawaiian Airlines baggage guide and Alaska Airlines baggage guide cover the bag rules for each brand.

The Honolulu route stays. Hawaiian has flown Honolulu to Osaka since 2011 and will keep it, so you can fly nonstop from Seattle or connect through Honolulu.

Who Seattle to Osaka flights help, and who should still fly via Tokyo

Seattle residents gain the most. They get a nonstop flight to western Japan without changing planes in Tokyo or Honolulu.

Travelers elsewhere in the US can connect in Seattle. The airline says the route gives the shortest connecting path to Osaka from many points across its network. Seattle is already the largest airline hub on the West Coast, with 103 nonstop destinations across North America.

The route also fits trips built around Kyoto, Nara and Kobe. The airline pitches Osaka as the door to that wider Kansai region. All three cities have direct trains or buses from Kansai Airport.

Tokyo still makes sense in two cases. If you travel before 14 May 2027, the Osaka nonstop has not started, and Alaska’s Seattle long-haul network already includes Tokyo. If your trip starts in Tokyo and ends in Osaka, a Tokyo arrival saves you backtracking.

US passport holders can visit without a visa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan visa exemption list includes the United States among 74 countries and regions. US visitors get a 90-day stay. Our Japan visa guide for US passport holders covers the details.
