Japan visa requirements by country: who needs a visa

Japan asks for a visa in principle. The exception is the list of 74 countries and regions whose nationals can enter visa-free for a short stay of up to 90 days (15 or 30 days for a few). Find your passport below. The foreign ministry revised the list on 1 September 2025.

Who needs a visa

Japan asks for a visa in principle and exempts a list of countries and regions.

Step 1: Prepare the documents. If someone in Japan invites or guarantees you, they send their documents to you, not to the embassy.
Step 2: Apply at the Japanese embassy or consulate for the place you live, at an accredited agency, at a Japan Visa Application Centre or online, whichever that mission specifies.
Step 3: Wait for the examination. The standard time is 5 working days from the day after the application is received. It can take more than a month if the case is referred to Tokyo.
Step 4: Collect the result. The visa fee is paid only if a visa is issued.
Step 5: Enter Japan within 3 months. A single-entry visa is valid for three months and for one entry.

At the airport, visa or not

Fill in the Disembarkation Card for Foreigner. The Immigration Services Agency recommends doing it online with Visit Japan Web; a paper card is still accepted.
Give your fingerprints and a facial photograph at immigration, unless exempted by law.
The officer checks that your passport and visa are valid, that your stated purpose is genuine and that your planned stay fits the permitted period.

A visa is one condition for landing, not a guarantee. An immigration officer still decides at the airport.

JESTA, Japan's travel authorisation

Not needed yet. Japan passed a law on 29 May 2026 to create JESTA, an electronic travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors. It starts on a date to be set by Cabinet Order, no later than 31 March 2029.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit Japan?

It depends on your passport. Nationals of 74 countries and regions can enter without a visa for a short stay, most for up to 90 days. Everyone else needs a visa before travelling. The foreign ministry revised the list on 1 September 2025.

Can I get a visa on arrival in Japan?

No. The foreign ministry states that visas cannot be obtained at the port of entry in Japan. Apply before you travel.

How much is a Japan visa?

From 1 July 2026 the fee is about 15,000 yen for a single-entry visa and about 30,000 yen for a multiple-entry visa, paid in local currency. It can differ by nationality and purpose.

How long does a Japan visa take?

The foreign ministry's standard is 5 working days from the day after the application is received. It can take more than a month if the case is referred to Tokyo.

What is JAPAN eVISA?

JAPAN eVISA is a system that provides a way to apply for a visa online and issue an electronic visa (eVISA) required for entry to Japan. Currently, you can apply only for a single-entry short-term stay (up to 90 days) visa for the purpose of tourism.

Is JESTA required to enter Japan?

Not yet. The law creating JESTA passed on 29 May 2026. It starts on a date to be set by Cabinet Order, no later than 31 March 2029.

Can I work in Japan on a tourist visa or visa-free stay?

No. A short stay does not include paid work. The Immigration Services Agency says Temporary Visitors cannot work in Japan in principle, apart from short business trips.

Does a visa guarantee entry to Japan?

No. The foreign ministry says that holding a visa is only one of the requirements for landing permission and does not guarantee that the holder will be able to enter Japan.
