Japanese tea shops list matcha by the tin, box or bag, with the weight in the product name.

Most of the 124 matcha come in 20 g, 30 g or 40 g. The table below gives the count, the price range and the median for each size.

The 40 g median of 4,104 yen is lower than the 30 g median. Some low-priced teas come in 40 g. Nanaya sells 楽々抹茶 40 g for 864 yen, and Gion Tsujiri sells 抹茶 梅の白 40 g for 1,296 yen.

The drawing shows the words for size and tax that you see in Japanese product names and on price tags. 缶入 (kan-iri) means in a tin, 箱 (hako) means box and 袋 (fukuro) means bag, so 20g缶入 is a 20 g tin.

Some brands sell the same tea in several sizes. Fukujuen official online shop matcha list sells 石臼挽き抹茶 白 at 4,320 yen for 40 g, 10,260 yen for 100 g and 19,440 yen for 200 g. The 100 g and 200 g prices are marked as including tax. The 40 g price has no tax wording.

Jugetsudo official online shop matcha list also sells refill packs. 抹茶 キュヴェ あさひ is 9,950 yen in a 20 g tin with a box and 7,950 yen as a 20 g refill pack. 抹茶 円光 is 7,250 yen in the tin and 5,250 yen as a refill.

Across the three sizes, a 20 g tin runs from 864 yen at Ippodo and Morihan to 21,600 yen for Marukyu Koyamaen’s 抹茶 天授. At 40 g the top price is 43,200 yen.

Itohkyuemon is at the top with a median of 297 yen per gram across 5 matcha. Nanaya is at the bottom with 65 yen across 5. Ippodo sits at 124.2 yen, close to the overall median of 125.1 yen.

A brand’s median depends on what it sells. Saijoen has only 1 matcha with a size in grams, so its 118.8 yen is a single price. Jugetsudo, Nakamura Tokichi, Fukujuen, Morihan and Marukyu Koyamaen each have 12 matcha counted, so their medians are steadier.

Seven of these brands have their own page in our database: Ippodo Tea, Marukyu Koyamaen, Nakamura Tokichi Honten, Gion Tsujiri, Itohkyuemon, Fukujuen and THE MATCHA TOKYO.

The cheapest and the most expensive matcha per gram

The biggest of the four price bands is the top one: 45 of the 124 matcha cost 200 yen or more per gram.

124 matcha by price per gram. If the price per gram is. Matcha. Under 50 yen. 12 matcha.
124 matcha by price per gram

The lookup sorts all 124 matcha into four price bands. 12 cost under 50 yen per gram, 34 cost 50 to 99.9 yen, and 33 cost 100 to 199.9 yen. The median of all 124 is 125.1 yen.

The cheapest gram on our list is Jugetsudo’s 抹茶 富士の春 in a 300 g tin. It costs 4,480 yen with tax, or 14.9 yen per gram.

The most expensive gram is Marukyu Koyamaen’s 抹茶 天授 in a 20 g tin. It costs 21,600 yen, or 1,080 yen per gram. The Marukyu Koyamaen official online shop matcha catalogue does not say whether its prices include tax.

Each brand has a wide spread of its own. Here are four examples.

  • Ippodo: 初昔 20 g at 864 yen is 43.2 yen per gram, and 閑坐 20 g at 16,200 yen is 810 yen.
  • Nakamura Tokichi: 浮島の白 30 g at 1,980 yen is 66 yen per gram, and 初昔 30 g at 17,500 yen is 583.3 yen.
  • Gion Tsujiri: 梅の白 40 g at 1,296 yen is 32.4 yen per gram, and 建都の昔 40 g at 9,180 yen is 229.5 yen.
  • Morihan: 上別儀 20 g at 864 yen is 43.2 yen per gram, and 德昔 30 g at 9,720 yen is 324 yen.

All four brands mark these prices as including tax. Note that one tea name can mean very different prices. 初昔 (Hatsu-mukashi) is 864 yen for 20 g at Ippodo. At Nakamura Tokichi Honten official online shop matcha list, a 30 g tin of 初昔 is 17,500 yen.

A tin is not the only way to pay for matcha. Want it whisked in front of you? Our tea ceremony price list puts the median at 3,731 yen per 45 minutes across 38 plans.

Usucha, koicha and matcha for cooking

Some shops label a matcha as usucha (thin tea) or koicha (thick tea). We used these labels only where the shop itself gave one.

  • Usucha: 8 matcha at 5 brands, median 93.2 yen per gram.
  • Koicha: 5 matcha at 2 brands, median 162 yen per gram.
  • Cooking or baking: 4 matcha at 3 brands, median 32.3 yen per gram.

Most matcha carry neither label. The usucha and koicha medians cover only the labelled teas, so the groups are small.

Kanbayashi Shunsho shows how the labels look. Its 御薄茶 万代昔 (usucha) 40 g tin is 1,944 yen, and its 御濃茶 初昔 (koicha) 20 g tin is 4,320 yen. Saijoen marks its 粋 (SUI) 20 g tin with [薄茶], the word for usucha, at 2,376 yen.

Cooking matcha sits outside our main count, at a median of 32.3 yen per gram. At Itohkyuemon official online shop Uji matcha list, a お徳用抹茶 100 g bag for sweets and cooking is 3,218 yen with tax. The shop page shows a selling period for it that ends on 18 November 2026.

Every pair in the table works the same way. Hatsu-mukashi (初昔) is 864 yen in Japan and 800 yen on the Global Online Shop. Kanza (閑坐) is 16,200 yen in Japan and 15,000 yen overseas.

How Ippodo’s overseas price becomes the Japan price

The three steps in the drawing follow Hatsu-mukashi. Start with 800 yen before tax, multiply by 1.08, and you get the 864 yen Japanese price. The Global Online Shop price does not include shipping or the import taxes of your country.

So buying in person in Kyoto or Tokyo means paying the 8% tax instead of shipping and import taxes. Ippodo has 3 shops in our list: the Kyoto main store, Aoyama and the Shin-Marunouchi Building.

The Global Online Shop also raised these 11 teas on 1 October 2026, by 17 to 50 percent. Hatsu-mukashi went from 600 to 800 yen before tax, and Kanza from 10,000 to 15,000 yen.

Tax, shop prices and how we counted

We counted 124 matcha at 15 brands. For each one we divided the listed price by the grams on the label. Hojicha and matcha sold for cooking or baking are left out of the 125.1 yen median.

12 of the 15 brands mark their prices as including tax. Hoshino Seichaen, Marukyu Koyamaen and THE MATCHA TOKYO do not say whether their prices include tax. We use their prices as listed, and we do not add or remove tax.

On a shop page or price tag, look for two words. 税込 (zeikomi) means tax included, and 税抜 (zeinuki) means before tax. Fukujuen shows both: 寿の白 20 g is 1,296 yen, with 税抜 1,200 yen beside it.

All prices here come from online shops. A price in a shop in Kyoto or Tokyo can differ, so check the tag before you pay.

Some tea houses, Itohkyuemon among them, offer tax-free shopping to visitors. Our tax-free shopping guide explains who can use it and how.

Matcha is a powder, so it does not count as a liquid in your carry-on bag. Our page on powders on the plane covers the rules for flying home.
