Not covered

Limited express trains, including the Shinkansen, need the full fare and charges.
The South Hokkaido Railway (Kikonai to Goryokaku).
Other non-JR lines need their own tickets.

Where to buy the Hokkaido & East Japan Pass (北海道＆東日本パス)

Sold at reserved-seat ticket machines and ticket offices at major JR East and JR Hokkaido stations, at JR EAST Travel Service Centers and at major travel agencies.

Seats and using the pass

You can change the start date once, while unused.
The pass is valid until the last train on its final day.

Refunds

Refunds only within the valid period while unused, at the place of sale, minus a 220 yen fee.

Good to know

With a separate special limited express ticket, you can stand or take an empty seat on the Hokkaido Shinkansen between Shin-Aomori and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.
Express trains can be used if you buy the express ticket separately.
On a few short sections, such as Aomori to Shin-Aomori, you may use limited express seats with the pass alone.
Tickets sold until March 13, 2026 cost 11,530 yen for adults; from March 14, 2026 the price is 11,780 yen.
