Contact lens solution: a medicine in Japan, a plain liquid in the UK

Japan screens contact lens solution as a medicine. Some authorities do the same and others list it as an ordinary liquid, which changes what happens to a large bottle.

Where the Japanese lists put it
Japan's liquids list names contact lens solution as an example of prescription and over-the-counter medications, the group excepted from the usual container limit. The Japanese edition names storage solution for contact lenses and disposable contact lenses in that group. The main list of restricted items, which sets the quantities, files cleaning fluid for contact lenses under cosmetics, together with fluids for dentures, wigs, jewellery and glasses.
Saline and eye drops are in the same group
The row that names contact lens solution is headed prescription and over-the-counter medications, including eye drops and saline solution for medical purposes. Eye drops are therefore read the same way as the solution. The list permits these only in the amount necessary in the cabin.

The authorities do not agree on what this bottle is. GOV.UK's table of personal items allows contact lens solution in hand luggage up to 100ml, with no medical wording. Taiwan's CAA counts lens cleaning solution among everyday liquids that must meet the limit, and CASA files it under toiletries. The TSA's entry points to its allowance for larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, yet warns that some solutions contain chemicals that typically alarm at screening.
