Can you bring deodorant on a plane?
In Japan deodorant is allowed in carry-on and checked bags, with conditions. Carry-on: Yes. Each container 0.5 litres or 0.5kg or less, 2 litres or 2kg per person in total, with a cap protecting the valve of a spray can. Deodorant sprays and antiperspirant gels are on Japan's liquids list: 100ml or less per container in carry-on on international flights. Checked baggage: Yes, within the same limits and with the cap on.

Deodorant on flights in and from Japan
On a domestic flight only the quantity limits apply. On an international flight the liquid rule comes on top.
| Where | Allowed? | What applies |
|---|---|---|
| In the cabin | Yes, within limits | Yes. Each container 0.5 litres or 0.5kg or less, 2 litres or 2kg per person in total, with a cap protecting the valve of a spray can. Deodorant sprays and antiperspirant gels are on Japan's liquids list: 100ml or less per container in carry-on on international flights. That list lets an aerosol can into the cabin only if it is applied directly to the skin, so a can of cooling spray for clothing cannot be carried on international flights. |
| In checked baggage | Conditions | Yes, within the same limits and with the cap on. |
- Domestic flights in Japan
- The 100ml liquid limit does not apply.
- International flights from Japan
- Each container 100ml or less, all of them inside one transparent re-sealable bag of 1 litre or less, one bag per person.
Deodorant by form: spray can, liquid, gel, stick and powder
The answer for deodorant changes with the form it comes in, and the lists name the forms one by one.
- For the body, for clothes, for the room
- Japan's main list puts antiperspirant, refreshing and cooling sprays, including those for clothing, in its cosmetics table, next to fragrance and deodorising sprays for the body, clothing and rooms. On international flights the Japanese liquids list is narrower: it lets only spray cans put straight on the skin into the cabin, such as antiperspirant, cooling and body deodorant sprays, so a can for clothes or rooms goes in checked baggage. CASA gives room deodorant as an example of household aerosols with a flammable gas label, which are not permitted.
- Gel and liquid are named, a solid stick is not
- Besides sprays, the Japanese liquids list names antiperspirant gels, in a row shared with hair gels. A solid stick has no row, and the opening note limits the restriction to liquids, gels, aerosols and things that lose their form outside the container. The TSA makes the split explicit with separate entries: Deodorant (aerosol) and Deodorant (liquid) at 3.4oz/100 ml, and Deodorant (Solid) with no limit stated.
- Powder deodorant on flights from Australia
- Australia screens powder as a separate class. Its security page gives some powdered deodorant as an example of an inorganic powder, and on international flights caps those at 350 mL or 350 g per container and at the same amount per person overall. Powders may be asked for separately at the checkpoint, and they do not need to go in the re-sealable bag.
- Spray cans in a suitcase, and the crew
- Narita Airport's FAQ takes the suitcase question head on: an antiperspirant spray meant for the skin may be packed in checked baggage. Taiwan's CAA and Hong Kong's CAD add a line about the people on board: whatever gas a toiletry aerosol lets out must not cause crew members such extreme annoyance or discomfort that they cannot do their duties.
Deodorant: the rule country by country
The carry-on answer for deodorant is the same in all 7 other places we checked. The limits themselves are not identical, so read the row for the country you fly from.

Frequently asked questions
Can you bring deodorant on a plane?
On flights in and from Japan: Yes. Each container 0.5 litres or 0.5kg or less, 2 litres or 2kg per person in total, with a cap protecting the valve of a spray can. Deodorant sprays and antiperspirant gels are on Japan's liquids list: 100ml or less per container in carry-on on international flights. In checked baggage: Yes, within the same limits and with the cap on.
Can you take deodorant on a plane in your carry-on?
Yes, and the form decides the limit. The TSA puts no size limit on Deodorant (Solid) in carry-on and holds its aerosol and liquid entries to 3.4oz/100 ml. CASA puts deodorant sticks with unrestricted toiletries that are not an aerosol and have no alcohol base. In Japan a deodorant body spray or an antiperspirant gel goes in the liquids bag on international flights.
How many cans of deodorant spray can you take on a plane?
In Japan the limit is by size, not by count: each can 0.5 kg or 0.5 litres or less, within 2 kg or 2 L per person shared with other toiletries and medicines. South Korea's aviation security site limits toiletry aerosols to 0.5 litres each and 4 cans altogether. Hong Kong's CAD pictures its 2 kg or 2 L total as 4 aerosol cans of 500 ml.
Does the TSA allow deodorant in carry-on bags?
Aerosol deodorant: carry-on 3.4oz/100 ml or less. Checked: allowed within the FAA limits of 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces) per person and 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces) per container, with the nozzle capped.
Can you take deodorant in hand luggage in the UK or Europe?
The United Kingdom: Spray deodorants are listed as liquids. Hand luggage: 100ml per container at most airports, up to 2 litres at some.
Can you put deodorant in checked luggage?
Yes, within the same limits and with the cap on.
What is the rule for deodorant on flights from Australia?
Australia: Deodorant: 0.5 kg or 0.5 L per item and 2 kg or 2 L in total per person, with a cap protecting the release valve of aerosols. On international flights carry-on aerosols must be 100 mL or 100 g or less and have a fitted cap.
