They are sold all over Japan from autumn to spring, in stick-on and pocket versions.
Disposable, gel and fuel hand warmers are filed differently
The air-activated packs sold across Japan are the kind Japan's list does not mention. Gel packs and fuel warmers are where the answers change.
- What Japan's list names instead
- The list has no row for disposable warmers. In its section on other daily goods it names the fuel types, oil-filled pocket warmers and platinum warmers, and marks them × for carry-on and × for checked baggage. The next row down, self-heating lunch boxes and drinks that carry a heating agent, is × × as well. Air-activated disposable packs are in neither row.
- Unlisted is not the same as guaranteed
- The list calls its rows representative examples. It adds that an item outside them can also be refused when its safety cannot be confirmed and it is judged to be dangerous goods. For disposable warmers that general caveat is all the list offers: it prints no quantity limit and no packing condition for them.
- The TSA's entries for things that warm
- The TSA lists Hand Warmers as Yes for carry-on and Yes for checked bags, with no special instruction attached. Instant Hot/Cold Packs and electric heating pads get the same pair of answers. The gel type is the odd one out: Heating Pad (Gel) is No for carry-on and Yes for checked bags.
- Gel heat packs can count as gels
- A reusable heat pack filled with gel is not a disposable warmer. Japan's liquids restriction on international flights covers gels, and Australia's Home Affairs names gel-filled heat packs: those used to keep prescription medicines at temperature are among the items a doctor's letter should list for the screening point.
