How many lighters can I take on a plane in Japan?
You can take this in the cabin, but there are conditions. One per person, carried on your body — not in your bag. Gas lighters and oil lighters with an absorbent filling are accepted. Oil tank lighters without the filling are not. In checked baggage: no.

What the rule says
Japan follows the international rules on dangerous goods, set out by the Civil Aviation Bureau.
| Where | Allowed? | What applies |
|---|---|---|
| In the cabin | Yes, within limits | One per person, carried on your body — not in your bag. Gas lighters and oil lighters with an absorbent filling are accepted. Oil tank lighters without the filling are not. |
| In checked baggage | No | No. |
What that means in practice
One lighter per person is the rule at every Japanese airport. A second one will be taken off you at the checkpoint. Electric arc and plasma lighters are not allowed at all.
Before you get to the checkpoint
- Airlines can be stricter than the national rule. If it matters to your trip, check your airline's own page.
- If an item is refused at the checkpoint you cannot go back and check it in — you lose it.
- Japanese security staff will ask before opening your bag, and most speak enough English for this.
You can buy this in Japan
- Where to buy it
- Convenience stores
- Roughly
- 100–150 yen
Worth weighing against the space it takes in your bag. Most of this is cheaper in Japan than the excess baggage fee, and hundred-yen shops carry the everyday version of almost everything.
One lighter, no matches
Japan is stricter here than many countries.
- One lighter per person, carried on your body rather than in a bag. A second is taken at the checkpoint.
- Matches are refused in the cabin and the hold — including safety matches, which some countries allow.
- Electric arc and plasma lighters are not accepted at all.
- E-cigarettes and heated tobacco go in the cabin only, and cannot be used or charged in flight.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take lighters in my hand luggage in Japan?

Can I put lighters in my checked bag?
No.
What happens if security stops me with lighters?
