Water bottles on flights in and from Japan
On a domestic flight the 100ml liquid limit does not apply. On an international flight it does.

| In the cabin | Yes, within limits | Empty: yes. Filled: on international flights the drink inside falls under the 100ml liquid limit. A thermos of hot water for baby formula can be carried on after inspection if the infant is travelling with you. |

- Domestic flights in Japan
- The 100ml liquid limit does not apply.
- International flights from Japan
- Each container 100ml or less, all of them inside one transparent re-sealable bag of 1 litre or less, one bag per person.

Empty, filled or frozen: how a water bottle is judged
The lists that name water bottles name them empty. What is inside is judged on its own.
- Coffee, tea or soup inside
- A filled flask is judged as the drink it holds. Japan's liquids list names tea and coffee in its Other Soft Drinks row and has a Soups row with corn cream soup, clam chowder and potage. The TSA makes the same split in its entries: Coffee (Liquid) and Soups are limited to 3.4oz/100 ml in carry-on, while Empty beverage container and Coffee Thermos (empty) are allowed.
- Ice counts as contents
- Ice left in the bottle is still contents under Japan's list. The Japanese-language edition puts ice in the same row as ice cream and shaved ice, and the only ice it excepts is ice packed with medicine that has to stay cold. The TSA allows frozen liquid items through the checkpoint if they are frozen solid when presented for screening. GOV.UK says you cannot carry frozen liquids in hand luggage.
- Not a container for liquor
- Japan's list of restricted items requires liquor to stay in the container it was sold in. Liquor that has been moved into a hip flask or another water-bottle-type container is marked as not acceptable. The note sits on both the row for drinks of 24% or less and the row for drinks over 24% and up to 70%, in the cabin and in checked baggage.
