Japan tax-free 90-day rule: the last day to leave after buying

You must pass the customs check when you leave Japan within 90 days of the purchase. The count starts on the day after you buy. For something bought on 1 November 2026 the last day is 30 January 2027.

How the 90 days are counted

The day you buy is not counted. Day 1 is the next day.

National Tax Agency“Within 90 days from the date of purchase” means the period from the day following the date of purchase to the 90th day. For example, if you purchase products on November 1, the deadline for confirmation at customs is January 30 of the following year.National Tax Agency

If you miss the deadline

Without the customs check there is no refund.
