Tax-free shopping for Japanese nationals living abroad: documents

Japanese nationals who have lived outside Japan continuously for two years or more can shop tax-free within six months of returning for a visit. They show a passport and one document that proves the two years abroad. From 1 November 2026 a My Number Card is accepted as that document.

Show your passport and one of these three documents.

The registered domicile no longer has to appear on these documents.

How the two years and the six months are counted

Both are counted from dates on your documents.

Two years abroad
From the date you moved abroad, or settled abroad, to the date of your latest entry into Japan shown in your passport
Six months
The shop confirms that less than six months have passed since you returned to Japan
