TOICA card (JR Central): price, refund and where it works
TOICA is the Tokai IC Card of Central Japan Railway Company: touch it to the ticket gate and the fare is deducted from the balance automatically. A TOICA costs 2,000 yen: a refundable 500 yen deposit plus 1,500 yen loaded on the card. Only cash is accepted.
Where to buy TOICA
- TOICA ticket machines and ticket offices
- A TOICA is sold at ticket vending machines with the TOICA sign and at ticket offices that handle TOICA, including ticket offices in the TOICA area and part of those at Tokaido Shinkansen stations. It cannot be bought at the ticket offices near the Shinkansen transfer gates.
- Tokaido Shinkansen stations outside the TOICA area
- At the JR Central ticket offices of Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, Odawara, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka stations, only the registered TOICA, the child TOICA and the TOICA commuter pass are sold.
- Ticket vending machines
- At a ticket vending machine, a new TOICA is one type at 2,000 yen. Registered, child and disabled-user TOICA cannot be handled at ticket vending machines.

Where you can use TOICA
- Other areas
- TOICA can be used in the IC card areas of Kitaca, PASMO, Suica, manaca, PiTaPa, ICOCA, Hayakaken, nimoca and SUGOCA. JR Central points to each card's website for details.
- Watch out
- Except within a commuter pass section, a TOICA cannot be used for a trip that crosses from one IC card area to another. Buy a ticket before you enter the gate.

- TOICA can be used across areas only in the through-service sections between the Suica and PASMO areas in the Tokyo region and between the SUGOCA and Hayakaken areas in Kyushu.

- TOICA cannot be used on some transport operators in the PASMO and PiTaPa areas.

- In the TOICA area, buy a limited express ticket or a seat ticket separately to ride a limited express train or a Home Liner.
- Shinkansen
- If you register your credit card and TOICA for the Shinkansen online reservation service and reserve a seat, you can board the Shinkansen by touching your TOICA to the ticket gate.
TOICA on your phone
iPhone
- ICOCA (TOICA model) in Apple Wallet
- On an iPhone, you can add a new TOICA-model ICOCA from Apple Wallet or bring in a TOICA or TOICA commuter pass you already have. You can also issue one from the ICOCA app.
- Apple Wallet: issued by JR West as an ICOCA
- Apple says you can add a TOICA card to Apple Wallet on an iPhone or Apple Watch. When you add or transfer a TOICA, JR West issues it as an ICOCA card.
Android
- ICOCA (TOICA model) in the Mobile ICOCA app
- On Android, the TOICA-model ICOCA is issued in the Mobile ICOCA app provided by JR West. You download the app from Google Play and need a WESTER ID and a registered payment card.
- App
- Charging and buying commuter passes with the TOICA-model ICOCA needs a credit, debit or prepaid card in your own name that supports 3-D Secure 2.0 (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, AMEX, Diners Club).
- Money in the app
- To issue a TOICA-model ICOCA without a commuter pass in the Mobile ICOCA app, you must charge at least 1,000 yen.
Refunds, expiry and lost cards

- A TOICA is refunded at a TOICA ticket office. Registered and disabled-user TOICA are not refunded at Aichi Loop Railway.

- Buying, refunding and reissuing a TOICA are not handled in the areas of other companies.
- If you lose it
- A lost registered, child or disabled-user TOICA is reissued for a 520 yen fee plus a new 500 yen deposit, 1,020 yen in cash in total. An unregistered TOICA cannot be reissued.

- A registered TOICA, a child TOICA, a TOICA for passengers with disabilities (own use) and a TOICA commuter pass can be used only by the person named on the card.
