Japan visa processing time: the 5-working-day standard and what delays it
The Japanese foreign ministry's standard is 5 working days, counted from the day after the embassy receives your application. That assumes nothing is wrong with it. If the embassy refers the case to Tokyo, the ministry says it can take more than a month, so apply early.

What makes it slower
- Many applications arriving in the same period.
- A request for extra documents or an interview.
- A referral to the foreign ministry in Tokyo.
- A long-stay application without a Certificate of Eligibility, which the ministry says typically takes one to three months.
The ministry does not speed up a case because a departure date is close. Applications are examined in the order received.
Once the visa is issued
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Japan visa take?
The foreign ministry's standard is 5 working days from the day after the application is received. It can take more than a month if the case is referred to Tokyo.
Can I get a Japan visa faster if my flight is soon?
No. The foreign ministry says applications are processed fairly in the order received and that it cannot decide before the examination is complete.
How long is a Japan visa valid after it is issued?
The period of validity of a single-entry visa (that becomes invalid as soon as once you enter Japan) is basically three months. Enter Japan within three months of the issue date.
Why is my Japan visa taking more than 5 days?
The 5-working-day standard applies only when there is no problem with the application. Extra documents, an interview or a referral to Tokyo add time; a referral can take more than a month.
